This 1-day course covers the skills that make up a confident backcountry skier/split-boarder: the fundamentals of avalanche phenomena/avoidance, uphill backcountry travel, tackling lines and, of course, how to use that new backcountry setup.

By the end of the day you'll have hands-on experience with the core skills of backcountry travel:

  • Efficient uphill (skinning) technique and track-setting
  • Gear use and transitions
  • Powder and off-piste descent technique
  • Basic avalanche hazard and terrain evaluation
  • Route finding and navigation
  • Companion rescue fundamentals

This course suits confident resort skiers making their first move into the backcountry. You should be comfortable on black diamond runs and in powder, and fit enough for 3+ hours of continuous uphill travel. No prior touring or avalanche training is required - this is designed as a starting point, not a follow-on course.
Prerequisites:

  • Intermediate to advanced ski ability
  • Comfortable skiing powder and black diamond runs
  • Fit for 3+ hours of uphill travel
  • No backcountry experience necessary
